Slay Your Own Sacred Cow
At the most recent Innovation University meeting in Lima, Peru, wevisited
the national bureau of registrations where they have reduced the time
it takes to register a property or business sale transaction from 60-90
days to just a few days, including complete title searches.
How does this kind of innovation happen? In this case, the director
of the Lima branch of the register literally started over-in 1994, he
fired 89% of the employees to eliminate corruption and implement a new
customer friendly system. Today, the form consumers must complete to
register property is less complicated than the typical hotel registration
in Peru!
Where are the sacred cows in your organization? Do you really believe
your current process or your current business model is the best possible
solution? Are you constantly searching for a radically different way
to solve your customers' problems? As Gary Hamel notes in his new book,"Leading
the Revolution," if you're not searching for the way to "put
yourself out of business," i.e., invent the next new business concept
that will render your current one obsolete, look out--because someone
else will find it!
